Though most common during the teen years, acne is a problem that irks people of all ages, gender and race. Acne is a result of an inflammation of the oil producing sebaceous glands. This seemingly small issue can cause extreme damage to a teens' personality if neglected and so adequate attention should be paid on treating this condition. And why only teens, acne can effect and bother anyone and should be attended to.
Most research suggests that acne results from a disorder of the sebaceous glands which secrete an oily substance known as sebum. Many skin doctors believe a male sex hormone androgen -- present in both males and females -- stimulates the production of sebum. When excess sebum builds up in the pores, bacteria multiplies and follicles fester. Hormonal imbalances caused by puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, and even stress can trigger acne outbreaks, as can certain drugs such as birth control pills and anabolic steroids. Genetics play a part as well. If your parents or siblings had acne, there's a good chance you will, too.
Acne is one of those highly visible conditions which, because it can lead to permanent scarring after the initial inflammation has subsided, causes a huge amount of embarrassment and emotional turmoil. Many acne sufferers become depressed or have crippled self-esteem, and the saddest part of the situation is that there is usually prescription, commercial, and natural acne medication which can not only clear up an existing case of acne, but prevent future ones.
